Pro-Palestine disuption at Salzburg Festival opening

At yesterdday’s opening of the Salzburg Festival, a speech by Minister of Culture Andreas Babler at the Felsenreitschule was interrupted by shouts of “Stop the genocide” and “Free Gaza now”, and the unfurl;ing of banners. The protestors were removed. Six were arrested.

The action was swiftly headlined on al-Jazeera and Iranian TV.

Federal President Van der Bellen said in his opening address:  ‘The situation in Gaza is devastating and cannot be justified in any way on humanitarian grounds. But please don’t forget October 2023, the worst pogrom of the post-war period.’
