THE NAME (En/Gr)

Why Tritonous?

The name is, quite simply, a deliberately misspelled English translation of the Greek word tritoniko.

It all starts with the tritone — a musical interval with a long and rather notorious history.

From the Middle Ages through to the end of the Renaissance, the tritone was regarded as “the devil in music.” Composers and singers who dared to use it were, in some cases, condemned by the Church, and the interval gradually became something to be avoided.

During the Baroque and Classical periods, the tritone began to make its way back into music, albeit with some restraint. Later, during the Romantic era and throughout the music of the 20th century, composers were free to use it without such restrictions.

The tritone is often used to create a sense of something dark, unsettling or even diabolical. Liszt, for example, uses it to evoke the image of Hell in his Dante Sonata.*

So this “devilish” and once “forbidden” musical interval gave us the first inspiration for the name.

There was another connection, too: a trio — piano, violin and cello — that uses the name Trio Tritonous.

But the story doesn’t end with the origin of the word.

The deliberate misspelling is also a little tribute to two things that are very close to the heart of the station.

First, TRITO — the Third Programme of ERT, where so much of my love for this music began.

And then the Greek word NOUS — meaning the mind, thought, intellect.

Put them together:

TRITO + NOUS = TRITOnous

And that is how the name came to be.

There is, of course, another theory suggesting that the radio was created by three donkeys.

That theory is only partially unfounded. 🙂
