Sir Michael Hill, founder of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition ‘for emerging young violinists’, died today aged 86.
As a teenager he wanted to be a concert soloist, only to be told he had started too late. So he went into the family jewellery business, made a fortune, built a golf course and endowed a violin competition.
Life well lived.
