Conductor ends 38 years with BBC

Tonight will be the last performance of Tadaaki Otaka as conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He was principal conductor from 1987 to 1995 and conductor laureate since then.

Otaka, 77, remains Music Director of the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra and the NHK Symphony.

The Welsh orchestra and chorus has issued this farewell note:

‘We extend our heartfelt thanks to Tadaaki Otaka, our esteemed Conductor Laureate at BBC National Orchestra & Chorus of Wales. His contribution at BBC NOW has made a lasting impact on the Nation, and his legacy will endure for many years to come.

‘Our musicians and audiences alike are deeply grateful for your musicianship, passion, and commitment. Our very best wishes for the future.’
