The Met’s general manager informs BR-Klassik that he has commissioned a new opera titled ‘The Mothers of Kherson’.
He adds: ‘For a long time, no one thought this could happen. Everyone believed it was just Putin’s provocation. At the beginning of the invasion, we organized several concerts and declared our solidarity with the people of Ukraine. We immediately became supporters of Ukraine and took a clear stance. For example, we sang the Ukrainian national anthem at the beginning of the next concert and founded the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, which features musicians from Ukraine living abroad. We have currently commissioned a new opera that deals with the events of the war. It will be called “The Mothers of Kherson.” I know that this very topic is very dear to everyone at the theater.’
