Overnight, US tenor cancel Moscow

The impetuous Lawrence Brownlee has had second thoughts about opening the season at a Moscow state concert hall.

He now says: ‘To all my fans, friends, and supporters: I have chosen to withdraw from the upcoming performance at Zaryadye Hall in Russia. Thank you to those of you who have voiced your thoughts on the situation – I have taken time to listen to your reactions, and I hear you.’ – Lawrence Brownlee

He was doubtless privately advised of the impact such a concert would have on his future at the Metropolitan Opera, where collaborators with the Russian state are shut out.
