BBC engages Marriner’s Academy as soloist training orchestra

BBC engages Marriner’s Academy as soloist training orchestra

BBC Radio 3 has made a quiet arrangement with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields to help train its New Generation Artists.

Pianist Julius Asal (pictured) has been chosen as the first ASMF BBC New Generation Associate. The ASMF will offer one NGA each season an opportunity to direct the orchestra as a concerto soloist, ‘creating ambitious and collaborative performances that transcend the traditional conductor-led model’. The NGA will receive coaching and mentoring from ASMF Principal Artist Murray Perahia, culminating in a concert at St Martin-in-the-Fields, broadcast on September 25 on BBC Radio 3.

While the BBC employed orchestras of its own, the Academy offers chamber-ensemble flexibility which is lacking in the corporate set-up.
