Make ‘Em Laugh – Donald O’Connor

There’s lots of competition for the greatest dancers in movies – think Gene Kelly, Eleanor Powell, Fred Astaire – and many for the funniest scenes – think Marx Brothers, Monty Python, Benny Hill – and just as many for the best slapstick – think Buster Keaton, Laurel & Hardy, Harold Lloyd – but who can you think of who can top all three with just one extended song and dance routine?

I can only think of one, this one, Donald O’Connor’s extraordinary turn in Singin’ In The Rain, 1952. When most people think of that great film they reference Gene Kelly in torrents of MGM rain, singing and dancing the hell out of the title song. But for me, this is the jewel of the musical, right here.
