It all started with a love for radio… and music
The idea of creating a radio station devoted mainly to classical music had been somewhere in the back of my mind for many years.
I grew up with ERT’s Third Programme (ERT is Greece’s National Radio and Television). It was one of the stations on the car radio, and sometime in the early ’80s I became completely hooked on Lillipoupoli. I never really left.
My first steps in radio, however, were as a pirate broadcaster. Every now and then I would buy a record — usually something spectacular, grand, symphonic and, preferably, a little over the top. We would use those records in our shows as station IDs, soundtracks or background music, especially before the late-night conversations began.
Then came 1988 and the beginning of Greece’s era of free radio.
I was incredibly lucky to start my professional career at a private radio station that was, in many ways, modelled on ERT. And, surprisingly enough, it had classical music programmes.
We started with something like 2,000–3,000 vinyl records, many of them featuring truly exceptional performances. Working alongside the people who prepared those programmes opened an entirely new world for me. I began discovering composers, performers and musicians, and, perhaps more importantly, I began learning how to listen.
Unfortunately, radio like that was not exactly a commercial success. About a year later, the station changed direction and the classical music programmes disappeared.
My knowledge of classical music was — and still is — far from complete. There were, and still are, huge gaps: periods, genres, forms, composers, interpretations. But in the late ’80s I met people who loved this music and knew it deeply.
They introduced me to concerts by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra and to performances that were perhaps a little less obvious, a little more adventurous. I still remember hearing the Academy of St Martin in the Fields at the Ceremony Hall of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Then came a long silence.
Until, at the beginning of the 21st century, a friend gave me a collection of radio programmes made by another friend, programmes about classical music — and not only classical music.
I listened to them.
And the idea came back.
By then I was working in computing, so naturally I started thinking about how such a radio station could actually be built. The idea was there, but the technology needed to make it possible simply wasn’t there yet.
There was also a person who played an important part in this journey: a musician who shared a great deal of her knowledge with me. Through her, I came into even closer contact with this world. We listened to music, we talked about it, we argued about it, we discovered things together.
Slowly, what had once seemed like a huge and rather chaotic universe began to make sense. The pieces started falling into place.
I made another attempt in 2010.
But it was in November 2011 that the idea finally became real.
Kostas, Nikos, Christos, Maria and I decided to actually build the station.
The decision was mainly mine, but the others were willing to help — and without them, you might today be listening to the Burkina Faso Symphony Orchestra. J
We built a computer to run the station, bought a server for streaming and started with around 150 pieces of music.
For the first week, we played nothing but Chopin.
I love Chopin.
Then, in the early hours of November 17, 2011, the station finally went on air.
And here we are.
We don’t really know how far this journey will take us. Perhaps that’s part of the beauty of it.
There is no business plan behind it. No commercial target. No intention of making money.
Just a love for music, a love for radio, and the desire to create something that we ourselves would want to listen to.
A radio station made for us.
And, every now and then…
for you too. 🙂
