Opera mourns a leading designer

Opera mourns a leading designer

Deutsch Oper Berlin has learned of the death, last Thursday, of the international set and costume designer Gottfried Pilz. Pilz, who retired two years ago, was 80.

Austrian born, he flourished in Berlin alongside Götz Friedrich, for whom he designed a Ring cycle. He made his Los Angeles Opera debut with Pique Dame in 1993 and went on to work at the Met, Munich, Covent Garden, Tel Aviv and the Bolshoi.

One of his proudest accomplishments was the German premiere in Leipzig of Messaien’s St Francis of Assisi.
