Vienna Phil premieres work by late timpanist

Vienna Phil premieres work by late timpanist

In a rare toe-dip into contemporary music, the Vienna Philharmonic will tonight play Bruno Hartl’s Ballad for Large Orchestra, ahead of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.

Hartl was a timpanist in the orchestra. He retired early in 2015 and died a year ago, aged 60.

The concert is conducted by the Frenchman Altinoglu.
