Leipzig mourns music director

The composer Thomas Hertel, former music director of Dresden State Theatre, died on Monday after a long illness.

Hertel, who was 73, suffered restrictions under Communism and left for West Germany in 1985, finding work at the Donaueschingen Music Festival. After the fall of Communism, he returned to Leipzig to compose for drama theatre.
