Berlin cancels production, sticks with Netrebko

Berlin cancels production, sticks with Netrebko

In her first interview as intendant of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Elisabeth Sobotka says she is cancelling one production in the 2025-26 season – which one has yet to be decided. The company is facing a five-million Euros budget cut.

Sobotka confirms, however, that she will continue to engage the highly-paid, politically sensitive Anna Netrebko: ‘She sticks to our maximum fee and she brings us very good income, which more than balances out. She feels very connected to our company. Superstars like her don’t make big money at the opera anyway, but in their concerts. I’m very happy that she’s coming to us, she was outstanding in our “Nabucco”.’
