Dear Alma,
I am in my final year of my music degree, and I have a problem with my assigned pianist. She is the wife of a Professor, and the worst pianist that they have for students. I think she was just hired because she is married to a senior teacher. She knows that I am not happy with her. She gets assigned to me every semester and I don’t think it’s my imagination that she purposely messes me up for recitals and playing tests. I have asked several times but they won’t give me a new pianist. I have worked hard for this degree and paid for it and I want my full value.
Annoyed
Dear Annoyed,
Yes you have paid for your education, worked hard, and deserve the best. The truth of the matter is that an education is not and cannot be a consistent quality. Involved teachers, exhausted teachers, qualified teachers who don’t know how to teach, great teachers who don’t know how to perform. You are nearly there, so do your best to finish with pride and your best behavior. Having the best pianist could have been a wonderful experience, but finding a way to perform under duress could be the best training there is. It will teach you resilience, the ability to nail your notes under straining circumstances, and help you learn how to be patient and forgiving of others, and most importantly, yourself.
Annoyed, you can see the finish line. Keep your head down, be kind, and find a way to appreciate what you have gotten from your education.
