Teachers walk out at Manhattan School of Music

Teachers walk out at Manhattan School of Music

The pre-college tutors are paid much less the Juilliard profs and they’ve had enough.

Here’s the union version:
On Feb. 1, the Association Representing Teaching Staff at Manhattan School of Music will launch its first strike in the institution’s 100-year history with a multi-union rally in front of the school building.

The one-week strike, Feb. 1—Feb. 7, is the result of MSM’s refusal to bargain in good faith and come to an agreement on a fair contract that reflects a commitment to its faculty of accomplished artist-performers and to providing the highest quality music education for generations to come.

The overwhelming majority of precollege faculty currently earn 43 percent less than their colleagues at similar institutions…. Faculty members in the union voted 98% in favor of a walk-out.
