Tributes pour in for cellist killed on German road

Tributes pour in for cellist killed on German road

Musicians are mourning the death of Matias de Oliveira Pinto, a cellist and professor, killed in a car crash near Münster on Monday night.

The Sao Paolo Symphony Orchestra writes: The Osesp Foundation deeply mourns the death of cellist Matias de Oliveira Pinto. Passionate about chamber music and striking presence on symphonic stages as a soloist, Matias will be especially remembered for his immense legacy as a teacher, shaping generations of musicians in Brazil and Europe.

Paulistani based in Germany, he lectured at the Berlin University of Arts and the University of Münster, in addition to conducting festivals and masterclasses. He studied with Zigmunt Kubala and was a scholar of the Herbert von Karajan Foundation at the Berlin Philharmonic Academy, with Csaba Onczay.

Onzay adds: This is a sad day. My heart is broken. Matias de Oliveira Pinto, my former student, good friend, excellent cellist, and famous professor, has passed away.
The tragic accident cut short his extremely valuable career.
He taught at the Münster University of Music and the University of the Arts, Berlin, and had an extensive artistic and pedagogical career. His death shocked the international classical music community and everyone who knew his art and kind personality.
We have known each other for nearly forty years. He was a permanent jury member of the Popper International Cello Competition, he played at the Liszt Academy Alumni concert in the Vigadó, and on my 70th birthday, he led the 25-piece cello orchestra at a surprise concert in the Solti Hall of the Liszt Academy. Our joint master classes and concerts on several continents of the world, the cello, music, and deep friendship are unforgettable and will remain eternal memories.
Your friend forever, Csaba

Concertmaster Emmanuele Baldini writes: The more we try to rationalize, the more life shows us it goes far beyond any comprehension. Today we lost our friend Matias de Oliveira Pinto. In the countless projects together, whether teaching, or rehearsing, playing, recording, he has always been admirable both from a human and professional point of view. But what made him almost unique (in a greedy and aggressive world) was the fact that he was constantly conciliating: I never heard a mean word against anyone coming out of his mouth. And because of that also your loss, already grave by the absence the artist and the didata will make, becomes tragic for being a good and honest man who says goodbye to us.
I’ll miss you Matias!

Heribert Koch, vice-dean of the Münster school, notes: Shocked and deeply saddened about the passing of our dear colleague, fantastic musician, inspirational teacher and wonderful person Matias de Oliveira Pinto.
