Leading countertenor, dies at 58

The death is reported, after a lengthy illness, of the Italian countertenor and conductor Roberto Balconi.

A Milanese, he studied in England with Evelyn Tubb and worked with English Baroque Soloists, Il Giardino Armonico, Il Complesso Barocco, The Consort of Musicke, Ensemble Baroque de Limoges and many more.

He recorded Nutrice in Monteverdi’s Incoronazione di Poppea conducted by John Eliot Gardiner and sang Bach Cantatas in New York and Boston under Gustav Leonhardt, leading to his own career as ensemble leader.
