German director, RIP

The independent minded theatre director Wolfgang Engel has died at 81.

He made his name internationally with a Dresden production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, refusing the East German state prize as a mark of his autonomy.

In later years he directed several operas in Leipzig and Braunschweig.
