Salome, the Dada opera

Salome, the Dada opera

The world premiere of Salome by Gerald Barry will take place tomorrow in Magdeburg, Germany.

Here’s some blurb:
Salome – wait! That’s an opera by Richard Strauss! Yes, and one by Antoine Mariotte, plus incidental music by Alexander Glazunov, illustrations by Aubrey Bearsley, and a song by British rock musician Pete Doherty – and most recently, an opera by Gerald Barry. They were and are all fascinated by Oscar Wilde’s 1891 French drama about the biblical princess who has the prophet John the Baptist executed so she can kiss his mouth. Wilde’s sensually direct portrayal of a young woman’s sexual desire caused a scandal in 1900 and still resonates today as a psychologically borderline experience.
The Irish composer Gerald Barry was Composer in Residence at the Magdeburg Theater in the 2022/23 season – his opera Alice in Wonderland caused a sensation when it had its German premiere. Anyone who has experienced this wild ride through the fairytale world will not be surprised that not everything in his Salome goes as expected. The imprisoned prophet converses in French, the king longs for an idyll on the beautiful Blue Danube, Salome picks up her typewriter, a Frankenstein operation is being prepared – and all this is based on Oscar Wilde…
