London loses out on orchestra tours

London loses out on orchestra tours

The Toronto Symphony is planning a Europe tour next winter with conductor Gustavo Gimeno.

It has dates in Spain, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and Austria.

Nothing in the UK.

Why not? Because London’s main concert halls – South Bank and Barbican – have lost interest and lack the means to host foreign orchestras. London, since Covid, has lost the right to be considered a capital of the orchestral universe. Only in the BBC Proms does it get a chance to experience the world’s best.
