Death of a formative conductor, 82

Death of a formative conductor, 82

The leading Mexican conductor Enrique Batiz died yesterday in his home country, aged 82.

He founded the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra in 1971 and directed it over four decades, except during the 1980s when he headed another Mexican orchestra. Batiz toured his Mexican orchestras worldwide and made altogether more than 150 recordings. He had a heavy schedule as a guest conductor and was, in the 1980s, principal guest of the Royal Philharmonic with London.

He was good at getting quick results from busy orchestras and impressed record producers with his time-conscious professionalism.
