A howl has gone up at Die Presse at the sight of next season’s concert listings. Chief critic by Wilhelm Sinkovicz has counted the concerts from two leading promoters and found that there is more Shostakovich on offer than any of Vienna’s classics – Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms.
The promoters clearly know there market. The old Viennese concertgoers have died out, to be replaced by immigrants from eastern Europe, sme of them musical and wealthy. Music goes where the money lives.
But there may be othr reasons. The following year, 2027, will see a Beethoven bonanza on the bicentenary of his death. The year after will feature Schubert. These things come in cycles. Nothing to get huffed about.
Start worrying when the Vienna Philharmonic plans a Schnittke cycle.
