A TV record for the BBC Proms?

A TV record for the BBC Proms?

At last night’s Proms launch Suzy Klein (pic), director of classical music on BBC Television, announced that no fewer than 25 of the Proms will be televised. None or ten will be on the main channels BBC1 and BBC2, the rest on BBC4.

This, through whichever coloured glasses you look at it, marks a breakthrough for the Proms on TV. Even in golden ages past, there were seldom as many as a dozen concerts to be seen on screen.

So what has prompted the change of policy? Credit, first, to Klein’s tenacity. Second to the BBC’s awareness that its charter expires in 2027 and the corporation needs to improve the public service part of its broadcasting.

The Proms are central to the perception of what the BBC gives to the nation. Good that they have remembered.
