We have been informed by one of her students that the distinguished opera soprano Marilyn Cotlow died towards the end of last year at the age of 100. Her later years were disrupted after being removed by a third party from the home she shared with her son, Remy. Friends have been unable to establish contact.

Minneapolis born, Cotow created the role of Lucy in Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Telephone and performed leading roles at the Met and in Europe. She was married to New Orleans and Syracus concertmaster Eugene Altschuler, later a member of the Cleveland Orchestra. Her pupils included Alessandra Marc and Jennifer Wilson. She was an important figure who should not pass unnoticed.
