An English woman is Berlin’s new cultural senator

It has been confirmed today by giverning mayor Kai Wegner that Sarah Wedl-Wilson will be the new Senator for Culture, succeeding Joe Chialo, who resigned at the weekend.

Wedl-Wilson, 55, originally from Watford, went to school in north London before reading linguistics in Cambridge. She landed a job in the music business at IMG Artists in 1991 and moved on to a succession of posts in Germany and Austria, starting at the Camerata Salzburg and the Cologne Philharmonic. In 2000 she became managing director of the Innsbruck Festival of Ancient Music GmbH. In 2014, she joined the Mozarteum University Salzburg, taking over as interim manager. From October 2019 to April 2023, she served as Rector of the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. Snce then she has been State Secretary for Culture in Berlin, woriking under Senator Joe Chialo.

In the wake of Chialo’s brutal cuts to cultural institutions, Mayor Kai Wegner said today: ‘We need someone who listens and engages in dialogue with cultural creators.’
