In the past few minutes it has been decided that the next chief at La Scala will be the Korean conductor Myung Whun Chung.
Catch your breath.
He will start in 2027.
The favourite to succeed Riccardo Chailly had been Daniele Gatti. It’s not yet clear what went wrong (except for political meddling).
Chung, 72, was music director of the Paris Opéra during the turbulent period of 1989 to 1994. He headed the Seoul Philharmonic from 2005 to 2015. In Italy he was Principal Conductor of the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome (1997-2005) and of the Filarmonica della Scala, where he was nmed emeritus in 2023. Its musicians must have signalled that they preferred him to Gatti.
