The background to this morning’s election of the next music director at La Scala is becoming a little clearer.
As so often, the data say it all.
Myung Whun Chung debuted at La Scala in 1989 and has maintained strong ties with the orchestra. He has conducted more than 140 concerts and nine operas, a total exceeded only by the company’s music directors.
Although Daniele Gatti had a powerful lobby of supporters, Chung had a stronger presence with the musicians of the house. The only impediment was whether tha government would let the position go to a non-Italian. In the event, there was no objection from Rome.
