The music director in Freiburg am Breisgau, André de Ridder, was today named music director of English National Opera. He starts in autumn 2027, by which time there may not be much left of the company.
ENO has given over its London home mostly to stage musicals. The core company is supposed to perform opera from time to time in London and Manchester but the budget is grim and there is no assurance of longterm funding.
De Ridder, 54, is a contempoary specialist. At ENO, he has previously conducted premieres of Gerald Barry’s The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant and Michel van der Aa’s Sunken Garden. But that was more tha a decade ago, in ENO’s heyday.
