Timpani legend dies

Timpani legend dies

Franck Rabbio writes:

It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce the passing of my father, Salvatore Rabbio, who died Monday night at the age of 90.
Sal was the Principal Timpanist for the Detroit Symphony from 1958-1998.
He played under numerous world renowned conductors and is on dozens of recordings on the Mercury, London, Chandos, Columbia and RCA labels.
Sal was head of the Pecussion Department at Wayne State University (1962-86), Adjunct Professor of Timpani at the University of Michigan, and a member of the faculty at the Boston Conservatory of Music. He taught hundreds of students through the years.
Salvatore was known for his sound, intonation, and musical playing. His saying “play the music, not just the notes” summarizes his musical philosophy.
