High drama at the hunger-strike Philharmonic

High drama at the hunger-strike Philharmonic

Management of the Sibiu Philharmonic Orchestra in Romania has responded to our previous report:

At the end of the negotiation session of the Collective Labour Agreement  yesterday, May 14, 2025, members of the Sibiu Philharmonic Instrumentalists’ Union  seized three members of the Philharmonic’s management – the manager, one of the directors and the legal advisor.

The shocking gesture was motivated by the imposition of the signing of unilaterally drafted documents by the head of the union, Ms. Monica Florescu, an employee of the institution. Her husband, Mr. Makcim Fernandez Samodaiev, together with another employee, blocked the exit door of the office where the meeting was held, leaning against it.
They were joined by Ms. Florescu.

Despite the fact that the sequestered persons explained to them throughout the approximately 40 minutes of deprivation of liberty the seriousness of this act, the trade unionists did not give in and the entire negotiating team, made up of 11 trade union members supported by Mr. Cornel Briscaru, BNS representative, verbally encouraged and videotaped the aberrant gesture of Ms. Florescu and her husband, Mr. Makcim Fernandez Samodaiev.

The CLA negotiation meeting yesterday, May 14, 2025, at 14.00, took place at the invitation of the management of the Philharmonic, which since the summer of 2022 has been  trying to finalize this important document that will regulate the institutional activity. The union of the Philharmonic has been delaying, for years, the signing of the CLA, using all the artifices bordering on legality to maintain the collective labor conflict, through absences from negotiation
meetings, endless waves of complaints, petitions and repetitive requests, financial claims beyond the limits imposed by law.

This is the context in which Mr. Samodaiev pushed the manager of the Philharmonic, who was trying to leave the room, knocking him off balance, after which he fell and hit the furniture.

Realizing the serious consequences of his own act of seizing three employees of the Philharmonic for approximately 40 minutes and assaulting a person, Mr. Samodaiev completely changed his statements, no longer made the unlocking of the door conditional on the signing of  documents imposed by his wife, Mrs. Florescu, and adopted a false victim attitude, sitting on the floor and apparently spontaneously declaring a hunger strike. …

Not so much an orchestra, perhaps. More like a soap opera.
