Dear Alma, My star student’s Mum has dumped me

Dear Alma, My star student’s Mum has dumped me

From our agony aunt:

Dear Alma,

I have been teaching a student for five years. I started him at age 11. He has progressed well and is now the top player in our city. Today his mother told me he will be switching to another teacher, partially to get a new perspective. I will continue to teach his two siblings.

I am slightly upset but understanding. The family would like to keep studying with me for the time being and then switch in a month or so.

Conflicted

Dear Conflicted,

It is entirely normal for parents and students to crave a change now and again. It’s never easy for a family to switch or a teacher to lose a student. It’s also a good opportunity for you to see the other side. I am sure you have had students come to you from other teachers.

Be kind, supportive and professional. I would suggest to them that it’s best for the student to make an immediate switch. It can be awkward for you and the student if you have lessons after you know there will be a change. If it feels right to you, leave the door open for them to return. Remember that you have to keep a good relationship with the family, and your kindness will be remembered.

And, tonight, treat yourself to a good meal and a nice bottle of wine. You deserve it!
