Kirill Petrenko: The Berlin Phil still plays as they did 30 years ago

Kirill Petrenko: The Berlin Phil still plays as they did 30 years ago

A revealing comment from the chief conductor’s annual meeting with the Berlin press:

‘In rehearsals, I tell the orchestra: Please do this and that – and then in the concert they will play it the way they learned it 30 years ago.

‘I smile at everyone and say, ‘Great.’ Inside, I’m thinking, ‘I’ll do this for a few more years and then I’ll stop…’

Sounds like he means it.

He went on to say: ‘I still have great respect for this orchestra. I come from Siberia and am the Chief Conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker.’
