A new opera about the Democratic Socialists of America

West Edge Opera of California are putting on a new opera about Dolores Huerta of the Democratic Socialists of America, leader of the five-year 1960s grape strike. She coined the slogan, ‘Si se puede – yes, we can’. Dolores, 95, expects to attend the opera’s opening night.

We present the world premiere of Dolores, a new opera about civil rights icon Dolores Huerta, composed by her cousin and Guggenheim Fellow, Nicolas Lell Benavides with a libretto by Marella Martin Koch.

Dolores is a powerful portrait of activism, sacrifice, and identity—told by artists with a personal connection to the story. The premiere is the first fully staged work born from our Aperture Project. The opera premieres here in Oakland and serendipitously tours to the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque located on the corner of Dolores Huerta Avenue and Cesar Chavez Blvd. We believe this premiere will mark a major cultural moment — both artistically and socially.
