Polish conductor, 61

The funeral took place today of Wlodzimierz Siedlik, director of the Polish Radio Choir in Kraków and of the Kraków Academic Choir of the Jagiellonian University.

He was head of the Paderewski Centre and professor at the John Paul II University.

Robert Piaskowski writes: ‘He conducted with a restrained charisma – frugal in gesture, always present, completely focused. Every move he made was meaningful. Often laughed, but never rubbish. He had something about a man who smiles even when he is silent. Huge tactic, personal culture, ethos and modesty were his hallmarks. He taught not only notes but also the meaning of music. His performances of Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki’s compositions – especially Totus Tuus – were not only artistic. As his choirs sounded in the temple today, the color of hundreds of voices seemed to be transported into another dimension…’
