Cough and phone wreck a Kaufmann recital

Cough and phone wreck a Kaufmann recital

From a review of the tenor’s recital at the Luxembourg Philharmonie:

“Tränenahnung” (premonition of tears) sets in. The audience has noticeably stopped breathing to follow the increasingly powerful piano playing of the tenor and his accompanist and song-writing mentor Helmut Deutsch.

But then, what felt like a major disaster: Not only does an outrageously unmuffled cough disrupt this moment shortly before the crucial end of the piece, but also a loud, audible cell phone ring. How disrespectful can you be?! Neither this evening nor the enthusiastic audience, but especially the artists, deserve this. Incomprehensible murmuring and head shaking erupt after the eruptions of special applause for Kaufmann after this performance and one of the emotional high points.
