Just in: Czech Phil names next chief

To no great surprise, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra has appointed the country’s most successful conductor, Jakub Hrůša, to be its next  music director from September 2028.

He will succeed Semyon Bychkov who is retiring after ten years.

Hrůša is presently Chief Conductor of the Bamberg Symphony and Music Director of the Royal Opera at Covent Garden. His official statement says: ‘The Czech Philharmonic is one of the world’s foremost orchestras today. It combines a unique tradition with extraordinary potential for artistic growth. Our country’s leading orchestra not only sets the tone of musical life in the Czech Republic in a special way, but also performs with breathtaking success on the world’s most prestigious stages. I am overjoyed and deeply honoured that the Czech Philharmonic has chosen to align its path with mine from 2028.’

On social media he clarifies: ‘With a deep sense of gratitude and respect, but above all with immense joy, I am announcing today together with the Czech Philharmonic @czechphilharmonic that I will become their new Chief Conductor and Music Director starting with the 2028/29 season. This is such a wonderful step in my life, and I find it hard to put into words the joy I feel. Until the 2028/29 season, I will of course continue as Chief Conductor of my beloved Bamberg Symphony @bambergsymphony and in the 2025/26 season I will also begin my tenure as Music Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in London @royalballetandopera.’
