Just in: LA Phil hires principal oboe from the NY Phil

Presently solo English horn at the New York Philharmonic, Ryan Roberts has announced himself on social media as the next principal oboe in the LA Philharmonic.

The LA seat is kept warm by frequent rotation.
Ryan says:
‘I am extremely honored to be joining the Los Angeles Philharmonic as Principal Oboe, starting in September.
‘As a band and orchestra student in Santa Monica’s public schools, I dreamt of performing with the ensemble that I grew up hearing in Disney Hall. My earliest memories of an orchestra, and of a conductor, were performances with Gustavo and the LA Phil. My first oboe teacher, David Weiss, was Principal Oboe of this great orchestra for three decades. Joining these musicians and performing in my home town once again will be an incredible joy.
‘And to my colleagues in the New York Philharmonic, who have given me so much in the past six seasons–I am eternally grateful to all of you. When I joined the orchestra I was fresh, eager, and constantly in awe of the beauty that I experienced in rehearsals and performances every week. Six years later, my awe has grown into a great sense of pride, for the playing that has inspired me so deeply now comes from my most cherished friends. I will miss you all, and thank you for lifting me up.
