La Scala’s rejected chief opens Bayreuth Festival

La Scala’s rejected chief opens Bayreuth Festival

The first conductor at the 2025 festival this week will be Daniele Gatti, rejected as chief conductor at La Scala Milan in favour of Myung Whun Chung.

He conducts a new production by Matthias Davids of Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

Gatti tells BR-Klassik:

‘When I did “Meistersinger” at La Scala, something touched me deeply. That was in 2017. La Scala had last shown “Meistersinger” in 1989. There hadn’t been a “Meistersinger” in Milan for almost three decades. No one in the orchestra had played back then, no one from the chorus had sung. I remember how, at the end of the first rehearsal, musicians came to me with tears in their eyes and said, “Maestro, you’re bringing us something incredible. We’ve never played such beautiful music.” For me, that was a sign of the power of this piece, and the musicians’ reaction after two hours of rehearsal was tears.’
