‘A Met musician earns less now than in 2011’

Representative of the orchestra musicians at the Meropolitan Opera are locked in negotiations with general manager Peter Gelb (pic) about a new contract. The present deal expires on August 31.

Two of the musicians, Stephanie Mortimore and Javier Gándara, have been sharing their considerations with the host of Economic Update, Professor Richard Wolff. Stephanie says: ‘A 25-year veteran string player in our orchestra is making a few hundred dollars less than they did in 2011.’
