Alan Yentob, RIP

Alan Yentob, RIP

The only man ever to be titled creative director at the BBC, Alan Yentob held editorial control of serious arts on television. Yentob, who has died of oesophigal cancer at the age of 78, made intensely focussed doumentaries for the Amnibus and Arena series before he was granted his own show, ‘Imagine’, as a counterpoint to Melvyn Bragg’s South Bank Show.

Some complained that he was too friendly with his subjects, taking a line of questioning that could be unquestioning. But Yentob obtained access to major figures from David Bowie to Mel Brooks and his legacy will be screened and rescreened so long as there is a BBC.
