Anja Silja: I have been on stage for 70 years

Anja Silja: I have been on stage for 70 years

The soprano, 85 today, made her debut at 15 in Barber of Seville before being groomed by Wieland Wagner at the Bayreuth Festival.

She says: No-one has sung as long as I have, not even Placido Domingo, who started much later.

Anja has this to say about opera directors: ‘Today, there are fewer and fewer directors who tell the main story, who pay attention not only to stage designs, but also to text and music. Text and scenic action correspond less and less. This is detrimental, above all, to the work and the score.’

She rules out a grand farewell: ‘Only a criminal returns to the scene of the crime.’
