Austria defunds leading festival by crippling 30 percent

Austria defunds leading festival by crippling 30 percent

A massive cut has been made in state and local subsidies for the lake-top Bregenz Festival at the western edge of the Austrian republic.

In a cooordinated triple-whammy, the centreal govenment, region and the town of Bregenz have lopped 2.1 million Euros off the festival’s 6.9 million subsidy in each of  the next two summers.

All the usual excuses.

The festival attracts a 99 percent paid attendance.

This year’s Bregenz Festival opens on July 16 with Der Freischütz on the lake and Enesco’s Oedipe indoors.
