The bank was founded in 1849 by George Ives, grandfather of the composer, who ran it from the family home. It inculcated a gift for business in the composer, who went on to found the New York insurance agency Ives & Myrick.

The Charles Ives home is now owned by the Danbury Museum and Historical Society.
