Belgrade’s musicians are under siege

Belgrade’s musicians are under siege

The Belgrade Philharmonic are on strike for the first time in its 102-year history. The musicians say they are the lowest paid in the Balkans.

The Government last week dismissed their board chairman and has refused to fill the vacant post of CEO.

Yesterday, Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković announced that plans for a new concert hall have been cancelled, despite the country’s president having promised the visiting Zubin Mehta that it would be built.

A design competition had been won by the London partnership Amanda Levit Architects.
