Birmingham trips the lights fantastic for Mahler 9th

Like President Trump, you never know what to expect in the city of Peaky Blinders.

Our mole scuttled out Symphony Hall a few hours ago.

Tonight’s performance of Mahler Symphony No 9 at Symphony Hall Birmingham received a standing ovation. Kazuki Yamada and the CBSO opened the concert with Takemitsu’s wordless 8 minute Requiem, eliding straight in to the Mahler. The final, hushed minutes of the symphony were accompanied by a gradual and subtle dimming of the lights, which suited the mood and did not feel like a gimmick. Kazuki Yamada stood perfectly still for some 15 seconds at the end, the spell only being broken by an impatient member of the audience.
