Boston Symphony drops chorus director

Boston Symphony drops chorus director

The British Choral Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, James Burton, will leave his position directly after the Tanglewood Fesival. Burton, 51, is also conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. He has been in both posts since 2017.

Neither he nor the clam-lipped BSO will give a reason for his departure.

Some say he was too much of a perfectionist for a number of chorus members.

His farewell performance will be Beethoven’s ninth symphony with Zubin Mehta on August 24.

A BSO spokesman said: ‘Out of respect to James, we didn’t issue a public announcement.’
