Breaking: Esa-Pekka Salonen becomes chief conductor in Paris and creative director in LA

As predicted on slippedisc.com, Esa-Pekka Salonen was this morning named Principal Conductor of the Orchestre de Paris and Creativity and Innovation Chair at the Philharmonie hall where the orchestra is resident.

Salonen, 67, will also become Creative Director of the LA Phil, conducting six weeks of concerts a year. He will ‘focus on multi-disciplinary projects, festivals and the innovative programming.’

The LA statement adds: ‘The LA Phil has formed an artistic partnership with Salonen and the Philharmonie de Paris performing arts center, which simultaneously appointed Salonen as Creativity and Innovation Chair as well as Principal Conductor, Orchestre de Paris.

The Finn was music director in Los Angeles from 1992 to 2007 so he’s navigating familiar terrain.

We are awaiting a full statement from Paris. At this stage it looks like win-win-win (LAPhil-OdP-E-PS).
