Breaking: Italy cancels Gergiev concert

The Italian news agency Ansa has just reported that the Royal Palace of Caserta has cancelled the symphony concert conducted by Valery Gergiev that was scheduled for July 27th.

It appears the site’s directorate was pressured to do so by the regional government.

Gergiev is a close supporter of the Russian President Vladimir Putin. Last week he streamed anti-Ukraine propaganda from the Bolshoi stage.

Carrying a Dutch EU passport and owning properties in Italy, Gergiev could not be banned from entering the country. But the Meloni government, which supports Ukraine, made no secret of its displeasure at his proposed performance.

Gergiev, for his part, was testing the waters for a possible return to western Europe through the agency of Alessandro Ariosi, a Swiss-based management company.
