Breaking: La Scala reject takes Florence post

Daniele Gatti, pased over by La Scala for the Korean Myung Whun Chung, was announced this morning as music director of the Maggio Musicale theatre in Florence. He starts next year and and will remain in charge until June 2029.

‘I am particularly happy to announce this appointment, said Sovrintendente Carlo Fuortes. ‘Daniele Gatti is one of the greatest conductors on the international scene and has already marked a profound mark on the recent history of our Theatre, holding up until last year the role of Principal with extraordinary artistic achievements. In the past we had the chance to work together on several occasions and I know well his vision, his discipline and his great musical sensitivity. The choice of Daniele Gatti – continues the superintendent – represents an artistic investment of the highest level. A sign of continuity but also of renewal: welcoming it to the musical guide of our Theater means reaffirming with strength the identity of Maggio as a centre of excellence, a place of creation and musical thought, faithful to its history but always projected towards the future.’

‘I’m happy,’ said Gatti, ‘and I’m happy for several reasons. I return to making music steadily with the extraordinary professors of the orchestra and with the artists of the choir of the Maggio Musicale, working with all the people connected to the Florentine Lyrical-Symphonic Foundation, and I do it in the new role of Music Director, after the previous experience as Principal. I also return to collaborate with Carlo Fuortes, a superintendent of high professionalism and loyalty, for whom I have great esteem, and with whom we have happily shared many projects in the past. Thank you all for this new artistic adventure.’
