Cancer claims versatile composer, 52

Cancer claims versatile composer, 52

Colleagues are mourning the Georgian composer Marianna Tscharkwiani, who lived for a while in Vienna and has died after a prolonged struggle with cancer.

Originally immersed in Stockhausen and electronic music, she became a compelling performer in various genres, including rock music.

Patricia Kopatchinskaja writes:
My dear friend Marianna has passed away. We were very close friends during our student years in Vienna, with you I learned Schönberg fantasy, with you I went to Venezuela to play Schubert, we talked about everything, laughed a lot and shared our young life experiences. There was still a long and regular contact via Skype, when she went back to Georgia and I went to Switzerland. She fell ill with cancer and battled with this terrible disease for almost her life. Sofia, her daughter is now without her mother and will not be able to share her adulthood with her. I hope she knows how sweet and smart her mother was, what a great friend, what a very special person. I’ll never forget her positive energy, her hilarious silence and her pace of speech.
